FINALS
It was the final siren heard around the world. After six seasons, The Bullets finally broke one of recreational football's longest droughts to win their first ever premiership in front of a record crowd at Elgar Park on Wednesday night. Tears of joy streamed from the faces of both players and supporters, with jubilant scenes emerging as news of the victory broke around the world.
At the centre of the celebrations was Warren 'Coachy' Burford, a man not without his critics. But at that time, at that moment, he was king of the world. His first order of business was paying tribute to those who surrounded him, his players. Their names read like a who's who of recreational football: Merryweather, Barisic, Mijic, Tsongas, Jones, Jones, and Jones.
In the end, it was a comfortable 25-point win. But the margin was irrelevant. What mattered was the win. And with it came the final chapter of a Cinderella story...
ROUND 6
Bullets fans are daring to dream as the club enters next week's grand final against The Wannabees. This is despite the fact that The Wannabees have defeated The Bullets in both of their encounters this season. The Bullets lost to The Wannabees in Round 3 and so it was to be again this week, with the side going down by 14 points. However, The Bullets will be buoyed by the return of sharpshooter, Andrew Merryweather, who returns this week.
Warren 'Coachy' Burford has been trying to keep a lid on the excitement this week, as the club prepares for its first grand final since forming a little under 5 years ago. 'Coachy' has put a media ban on all players, preventing Sunrise viewers from seeing Dean Jones' weekly travel segment, "Deano's Destinations".
He has also intensified the club's training sessions, a move that has reportedly angered ruckman Luke '32' Barisic, although no-one is sure, since he hasn't actually shown up to one of them yet.
The harsh sanctions were introduced after the club's tumultuous grand final parade on Tuesday. Thousands of fans flocked to Swanston St as city traffic stopped to a standstill. The only problem being that the event was totally unauthorised, with the club now facing a hefty fine from Melbourne City Council for disrupting traffic flow, and a large clean-up bill to remove the alleged seven tonnes of tickertape that the players were showered with by overzealous fans. Thus, it was no surprise when Lord Mayor Robert Doyle picked The Wannabees to win the game by 20 goals in the celebrity footy tipping component of the Herald-Sun.
ROUND 5
Fans of Narelle Jones are shocked and outraged over scandalous revelations that she is one of Tiger Woods' many mistresses. A story in this week's US Magazine contains sordid claims of an extramarital affair between the two. If the allegations are true, Jones would be unquestionably the most famous of Woods' alleged sexual conquests, with the story having potentially major ramifications for both her family and the club.
Many have met the reports with skepticism, noting that Narelle knows very little about golf, with one family insider quipping: "The only time I have seen her work on her swing was during a domestic dispute with her estranged husband Keith".
To date, no member of the Jones family have publicly commented on the scandal, except for a slightly confused Aunty Fay, who when asked by a packed media throng camped outside Narelle's house, that despite poor recent form, she would always be a "Tiger supporter", before adding "but that Wallace had to go".
Narelle was, unsurprisingly, absent from The Bullets team this week in their 87 point victory over The Mugars. Andrew Merryweather starred for The Bullets, reclaiming the club's goalkicking record by kicking 12 goals. He was ably assisted by Brent Jones, who slammed through 7 second-half goals. The Bullets will have to get the job done without Merryweather (who injured his ankle) next week, as they come up against the only side that has defeated them this year, The Wannabees. |
