Finals Heartache/Finals Joy!
10/12/2008
Every finals series has its ups and downs, tales of destiny and despair. And there was a wide spectrum of emotions when The Bullets emerged from their season's climax victorious by the narrowest of margins. The Bullets hung on to win by one point against a fast-finishing Whitneys outfit to secure their second win of the season and cement fifth position on the ladder.
It was a night to remember for Bullets goalkicking legend and 2005 Vitale Medallist Andrew Merryweather, whose third major for the day brought up his 100th career goal. It has been a turbulent season for the spearhead, but as usual when the moment cometh, so did the man.
It was a night of redemption for the Best First Year Player of 2005, Margit Gailis. She tragically missed the successful 2005 finals campaign after playing in the side all year, and had to wait three years for her next opportunity. And despite the rampaging Whitneys coming home with a wet sail, a couple of her late touches ensured that she wouldn't let this game slip.
For others, it was a bittersweet night. Simon Conti, the breakout star of The Bullets 2008 season. Watching from his hospital bed. Forced to sit out the game he had helped the side reach. Few know just how hard it must be to bring a team to the dance, but then have to sit it out.
But there is one who knew just how hard it is. Another who stood on the sidelines. One of the most decorated players the game has ever known. Dean Jones, the two-time Vitale Medallist and former leading goalkicker. Both Jones and Conti showed what team sport is all about, and it will only strengthen the club as they head into 2009.
