Coachy's
Corner: Round 2, 2009
Hi everyone, The Bullets this week faced a new side at Box Hill, The Mugars. The all female team from Melbourne Uni had come off a 114 point victory last week, while our group had had a 52 point win against AFL Vic. The Bullets welcomed Belinda Goldsworthy to the ranks for the start of Round 2. With everyone full of confidence, our forward line consisted of Simon, Luke & Belinda. Dani & Andrew played the mids and Brent, Narelle & Dean made up the backs. We got off to a good start with Simon & Luke combining for three goals before The Mugars scored their first. It didn't take long for Belinda to take her first shot at goal, but although the ball flew off the side of the boot for a point, she got another chance after a good mark from a Luke pass. This one went straight through, as did another two during the half. The Bullets were playing great footy. Simon finished the half with two goals and Luke five. Dean was impressive running out of defence, as was Brent, both using the ball well, and Narelle's opponent had barely touched the ball. Andrew was moving well in the centre, with he and Dani racking up possessions. We had ten goals on the board and were way ahead at half time. The same dominance took place during the second half. We moved Simon to the backline, Andrew up forward, and Dean to the centre. Luke was way too tall and reached up to take well over a dozen marks, finishing with a team home-&-away record of ten goals, while giving away others to Belinda & Andrew. Bel finished with an amazing five majors, while Andrew helped himself to four. Simon, Brent & Narelle were terrific down back, their opponents not getting a lot of the ball, while they got plenty. Dani's slick hands were on display again out of the middle, she also took some good marks around the ground as she drove the ball forward. Dean got handy possessions, and I'd like to play him in the middle again as he's a player who's played great footy in there. It was a 97 point win, with goals galore. Positives for me, the playing arena this season is a little bit shorter than previous years, as some teams seem to be scoring very heavily. I still believe Luke would have kicked 6-9, maybe 10, as he got one close in from Belinda. Not only that, he gave off half as many, he was just too tall for the opposition, & with long arms was always going to dominate if the ball got down there. Belinda looked at ease, taking some very good marks, usually against an opponent and to kick five was a great effort. Simon's early two goals, then his run & commitment out of the back half was great to watch - Brent wasn't far behind him, displaying good, attacking football. Andrew moved well in the centre and did what had to be done up forward slotting four in a big win. Finally, every player contributed to the side's huge score. We should all look forward to next week, it may be a closer game, which we haven't really had this season yet. If it is, it will be a good experience for all our team. Best Players: Luke, Simon, Belinda, Brent, Dani
