Coachy's Corner: Round 5, 2008

Hi everyone,

When thinking about the lead-up to our Round Five clash against an undefeated side in The Wannabees, I was sure of one thing; that we would be competitive on the day. What I wasn't sure of was how our final score would look, remembering we hadn't won a match to date, but also remembering our group, after two unlucky losses this season, were not far away from a win. I was also confident our players would enjoy another experience of rec footy. The Bullets welcomed back Brent Jones for his second match for the footy club.

I wanted to see how Simon would fare in the centre with very good opposition sticking with him, and it was a good opportunity to play Luke up forward with height on his side. Margit joined Simon in the middle while I teamed with Luke in front of goal. Rob H, Narelle & Brent started back and we were ready to go. Our team got plenty of the footy during the half. Simon was very good around the ground gathering possessions, Margit taking three good marks was in the play and Luke & I had posted a goal each to have us a couple of goals in front. Things were going nicely for us and when the ball headed down back,  Rob & Brent cleared it out, while Narelle was holding her female opponent kickless. Just as The Wannabees scored two goals to edge back mid-quarter, The Bullets got the ball down to Luke who slotted another one from a great mark. Andrew then replaced me and kicked another one himself to have us 12 points up at the break, 25-13. We had a bit of confidence going and everyone had put in a great effort. The players were positive at 1/2 time and looking forward to the next half - it was a good start, but not over yet.

Changes for the second half included Simon back to defence & Brent tackle his first ever run in the centre. Narelle also went to the middle, while Margit replaced her down back. The second half panned out to be a good tussle, but the pressure The Bullets put on The Wannabees always kept us ahead. The opposition were turning the footy over during the half & it just allowed us to keep possession & work the ball forward to give us scoring opportunities. Luke kicked two more goals that half to put our first win beyond doubt in a fantastic effort by him. Andrew was also terrific winning plenty of the ball with marks through the midfield & his beautiful passes brought Bullets players into the game. Margit, who had pushed right up from defence, was on the end of two passes each from Andrew & Simon & was a marking option for us as we looked for Luke. Brent impressed in the midfield winning his fair share of the footy & always putting pressure on opponents. Narelle chipped in with two more lovely marks & three kicks, two of them hitting the chest of teammates.  Our defence was excellent, Rob playing a superb match. When The Wannabees went forward, Rob was there to continually take saving marks & cut off attacks. Whether through marking the footy or letting it hit the ground after an opponents stray kick to make sure of possession, his judgment& reading of the play is outstanding. Simon played his best match for the team, he was everywhere in the first half, in which he barely stopped running. When moved back, he again won plenty of the ball & again ran hard, also taking a couple of marks.

The win, 38-19 was a great result for The Bullets, to overcome the top side plus every one of our players play well & more importantly contribute, was fantastic to see. The fact that we can walk away from the game & say everyone contributed something shows the best example of Rec.Footy. A win's always good for the group, & it was great to watch it all unfold on the boundary with Dean, Dan & Dave Beattie. We look forward to our final next week & with the shorter season, we'll say goodbye to '08.

Best Players: Rob.H, Luke, Simon, Andrew, Margit

PS - Big apologies to Brent & Narelle.
