Coachy's Corner: Round 2, 2008

Hi everyone,

We kicked off Round Two at 6:30 against new club The Whitneys. After a great tussle last week with The Cobras, we were looking forward to this one. The Bullets welcomed back to the playing field, Margit Tully, who played eight matches with us in 2005 and Danijela Mijic, who played four games in 2006. Another new player popped up this week, Kate Mellor, who started in defence.

For the first half, we tried Luke in the forward line so I could have a look at how Simon fared in the midfield. He was joined by Dani and they both applied themselves well in warm, humid conditions. Both players are very fit and fantastic runners and they showed that in the first half of footy. We were getting plenty of the ball, but errant kicking was creeping back into our game and scoring opportunities were going astray. Luke was sensational in the half taking marks and booting three goals - his third major coming from a mark over two defenders. Margit was proving to be a bit of a surprise packet, taking two excellent marks from long passes. She continued to find space, taking a further two marks and  losing her opponent, just as she did very well in '05. As the ball was making it's way down to The Whitneys forward line Rob Hazell, Dave Gutteridge and Kate all held their own in the back half & we were only 11 points behind at half time, 19-30. Rob and Dave's attack on the footy was good and it helps when your defenders are desperate to get to the ball first.

I swung a few changes for the second half. Luke went back to the centre with Margit; Simon headed back to defence where he had been so competitive last week and during the practice matches; Dani went forward, where I knew she could be damaging and Dave also went forward, where he had played so well last week. Luke continued his good form, bouncing back from a quiet Round One, his marking was back to it's best on Wednesday as was his tackling. Margit continued to make good position and took a couple more marks, she'll be better for every game she plays and gain more confidence every week. The football was spending a lot of time in The Bullets forward line, but not a lot was coming from it. We squandered chances and could have been a lot closer. Dani's positioning and marking was terrific, she ended with a goal and  two behinds, while Dave battled very hard and pushed up the ground to help the team. Rob is always solid down back and competed tough and hard as usual, Simon tried his guts out as always and newcomer Kate's last half saw The Bullets benefit from the kicks and handballs she won in a very good effort.

The end result was a 22 point loss, 30-52, and a feeling we're not not far away. Being competitive is the main thing. We just have to polish up a bit when going forward and when the footy's in our forward line.

Best Players: Luke, Dani, Simon, Margit, Dave
