Coachy's Corner: Round 8, 2007

Hi everyone,

This week our side were up against the Barracudas at 7:15, a team we had beaten easily two years ago. The Barracudas were not part of the competition last year but returned for season '07. The Bullets welcomed back Elodie for the match, as we tried a few players in different positions, something we'll be trying again next week for the close of the season. Rob Hazell started in the midfield with Narelle, Luke went up forward with Ruth & Andrew, while Dean played down back with Elodie & myself. I was looking forward to seeing how these field changes panned out.

In the middle, Rob adapted quite well, he had never played there before & got a fair bit of the footy. Narelle's hands were good again at the clearances& freed the big fella up a bit. Luke fared well up forward, pushing up the ground & taking a couple of marks. He also scored his first goal for the season from a mark leading out & was proving to be a target up there. In the back half, Elodie stopped her opponent, barely getting a touch after a nine-pointer was scored for the Barracudas earlier on. Dean got a few touches running out of defence, including play of the day; Dean won the footy down back & very nicely passed to a free Rob, who turned around & hit Ruth lace-out with a beautiful kick. Ruth went back & kicked a wonderful goal from a slight angle to show how well the Bullets can play. Minutes later Andrew slotted his first major to have us slightly down at half time 30-21.

We made more changes for the second half, Luke ventured back to the midfield joined by Elodie. Narelle & Rob went down back & Dean moved forward. Andrew kicked two more goals for the half & played well pushing up the ground but the Barracudas were making the most of their opportunities & kicking away. Rob was terrific in defence, supported by Narelle who got a couple of touches in the last line. Luke also played well, taking a few marks & winning kicks in the centre. The result was another loss, 61-33 with Andrew playing his last game for the year. It was great to see players adapt & be competitive in the first half in new positions. We will front up again next week - up against a good side & give our best with players again taking on new roles on the field.
